The first one, by Radar Online read “Michael Phelps Sex Scandal: Troubled Olympian’s Girlfriend Was Born A Man! “I was born intersex and named David Roy Fitch at birth,” an update on her Facebook page read.” Several stories with the same kind of headline followed, until someone was smart enough to figure out that Chandler was born with both set of reproductive organs. “But the time I could walk and talk I made it clear I was a girl and dressed as one.Those numbers refer to a population of people known today under the umbrella term of intersex. ‘Intersex’ is used as an umbrella term to denote a number of variations in a person’s bodily characteristics that do not match strict medical definitions of male or female.Intersex is NOT a medical condition but stands for the spectrum of variations of sex characteristics that naturally occur within the human species.Hida Viloria is a pioneering writer, intersex activist and founding director of the Intersex Campaign for Equality.Though s/he was raised as a girl, Viloria realized early on that he/r body was different, eventually discovering the term, "intersex," at age 26 in a San Francisco newspaper.In my early teens I was medically diagnosed and went on testosterone blockers, at 15 estrogen enhancers.
The "I" is distinct from the "T" for transgender people, who are typically born with a biological sex that fits the norm for male or female and then grow up to identify with the opposite gender.If you don't understand what intersex is, Google it. No one can say they knew me as a man or produce a photo of me as a man.There are people that remember me as an androgynous child at times because of what was forced upon me. I have always been a female regardless of labels and personal opinions. In a world of educated people that had all the facts of intersex and what it means and then to sell a magazine say Michael Phelps is dating a MAN.In Chandler's case, although some outlets did cover the term correctly, the majority failed. Or a person may be born with genitals that seem to be in-between the usual male and female types--for example, a girl may be born with a noticeably large clitoris, or lacking a vaginal opening, or a boy may be born with a notably small penis, or with a scrotum that is divided so that it has formed more like labia.Or a person may be born with mosaic genetics, so that some of her cells have XX chromosomes and some of them have XY.
